It's only money
A recent paper, written by Nobel Prize wining Joseph Stiglitz, a Columbia University professor, and Linda Bilmes, a Harvard budget expert, estimates the total cost of the war in Iraq to be 2 trillion dollars.
In an effort to understand this amount of money I tried to put $2,000,000,000,000.00 into my calculator and it won’t fit. I couldn’t even fit the $233,000,000.00 spent so far, $233,000,000.00 is enough to pay for health insurance for a year for 140,000,000 children or fund a worldwide hunger effort for 9 years. 9 now is a number that fits. It is a little short of covering the debt Bush and his buddies have built up since they started.
OK, maybe I need a new calculator.
Keep in mind this figure is for the war effort and the care of our wounded. We have put the job of rebuilding Iraq on the “back burner” for the moment. My guess we could have made Iraq the 51st state for 2 trillion. I’ll bet the Supreme Court would have appointed Laura Bush governor and Halliburton would have built her a palace.
Maybe it’s time.
